The Lowcountry Food Bank regularly feeds over 5,000 children through the BackPack Buddies weekend hunger-relief program, the Kids Cafe afterschool feeding program, the Summer Meals program, the School Pantry program, and the School Markets program that establishes a permanent food pantry in under-resourced schools. Through our child hunger-relief programs, the following was accomplished in 2022: Kids Café – Preparation of 115,926 Kids Café meals for distribution to 25 after-school sites during the school year. Fresh for Kids - Distributed 79,710 pounds of fresh produce to children and their families at Kids Café sites to enrolled children and through our new Pop-Up Produce distribution model which provided 10-15 pound bags of produce to students and their families during school dismissal time through the car and bus-rider lanes, holding 72 distributions at 34 school and library locations. Summer Meals - 20,403 meals were prepared for 18 summer camps and library programs across 5counties. Through our partnership with Boeing, we provided 260 children in Williamsburg County with breakfast and lunch through the Summer Eats Program, 10,400 meals in the month of July. Over 3,000 pounds of produce and 260 boxes of shelf-stable pantry food were provided to migrant families through partnerships with East Coast Migrant Head Start in Colleton County, Beaufort Jasper YMCA, and Charleston County School District's ESOL Program. BackPack Buddies – Distributed 105,834 hunger-relief backpacks to more than 60 school partners throughout the 10 counties we serve, serving about 3,000 children per week during the school year. School Pantry – Provides students and their families with a 25-pound box of staple food items to help stretch their monthly food budget. In partnership with 23 schools across five counties, distributed 5,280 25-pound shelf-stable School Pantry boxes to students and their families during the school year. School Markets – All School Markets transitioned to back to client choice, and 4 new School Markets were established. 1,200 frozen meals and 100,569 pounds of food and essential products were provided to children and their families through the School Markets. The Lowcountry Food Bank partners with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston to maintain an emergency food pantry in the medical center. Each month, the Lowcountry Food Bank partners with Soldiers’ Angels to provide more than 300 food-insecure Veterans and their families with nutritious food including fresh produce, shelf-stable and perishable items. Since 2019, the Lowcountry Food Bank has been providing prepared healthy meals and monthly fresh produce distributions for more than 60 Veterans and their families residing at Patriot Villas (a housing facility for Veterans experiencing homelessness). The Lowcountry Food Bank expanded the prepared meals program for Veterans in 2021 by partnering with the Oncology Department at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and the Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) to distribute prepared meals each week. Many Veterans throughout coastal South Carolina travel to Charleston to receive their cancer treatments and they must spend the night or multiple nights in a hotel. Food insecurity is an issue for these patients and the prepared meals ensure that they have access to the nutrients they need. In addition, the Lowcountry Food Bank partners with the Community Resource and Referral Centers (CRRC) to provide nutritious prepared meals to Veterans. The CRRC provides Veterans who are experiencing homelessness and Veterans with an elevated risk of experiencing homelessness with one-stop access to community-based, multiagency services and access to VA and non-VA benefits. Veterans can heat up the frozen meals and eat them on site, if needed. In 2022, through our partnerships with Patriot Villas, Lowcountry Veteran's Home, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, the Lowcountry Food Bank prepared and served 4,690 meals to Veterans and distributed over 7,629 pounds of produce to these same families.GeographiesCharleston County, SC, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFood aidVeterans––
