THESE EXPENSES INCLUDE MANY OF THE PROGRAMS THAT THE FOUNDATION FUNDS ON BEHALF OF GSSM INCLUDING: FINANCIAL AID FOR MEAL PLANS AND OTHER STUDENT ASSISTANCE, WHICH CAN INCLUDE APPLICATION FEES, COLLEGE VISITS, TEST FEES THAT STUDENT MAY INCUR BUT WHO FINANCIALLY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD AND STUDENT COUNCIL PROJECTS. WE ALSO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS IN THEIR ACADEMICS CLUBS AND COMPETITIONS WITH FUNDS FOR EQUIPMENT, TRAVEL, LODGING AND FOOD, ACCELERATE, GSSM'S STATEWIDE VIRTUAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM, ECONOMICS & FINANCE INSTITUTE, PASE, STATEWIDE TEACHER TRAINING, AND ENGAGE, A LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOL AFTERSCHOOL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM LEAD BY THE STUDENTS AT GSSM. GSSM ELEMENTARY BRINGS STEM EDUCATION TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS VIA THE STEM BUS, A HANDS ON EXPERIENCE OF ALL THINGS STEM FOR STUDENTS IN UNDERSERVED AREAS OF SOUTH CAROLINA. STUDENT RESEARCH & UNIQUE CLASSROOM OPPORTUNITIES: GSSM STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENGAGE IN AUTHENTIC RESEARCH PROJECTS TO TEST GROWTH PARAMETERS (E.G., LIGHT, NUTRIENTS, PH, ETC.), MICROBIAL DIVERSITY, AUTOMATION, GROWTH TOWER ENGINEERING, AND METHODS TO REDUCE PATHOGEN LOADS AMONG MANY POTENTIAL PROJECTS. ABOVE-AP BOTANY CAN INVESTIGATE THE IMPACTS OF VARYING DAY/NIGHT CYCLES, NUTRIENT SOURCES, AND PH ON PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT ON A TIMELINE THAT IS MORE CONDUCIVE TO ACADEMIC SCHEDULES THAN TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURAL METHODS. THIS SYSTEM WOULD BE A HANDS-ON TEACHING TOOL FOR OBSERVING PLANT GROWTH AND MANAGING MACRO- AND MICRO-NUTRIENT BALANCES. STUDENTS COULD ALSO COMPARE SOIL-GROWN PLANTS TO THOSE GROWN HYDROPONICALLY. AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CAN USE THE HYDROPONICS SYSTEM AS A MODEL TO STUDY WATER-USE, NUTRIENT-USE, AND WATER QUALITY.
