Program 1 [2020]
Hardscape - HOF's preservation staff restored 51 blocks (204 lots) of the East Hill area of Oakland despite having to reorganize from teams to individual work assignments due to COVID 19 protocols. In July 2020, HOF installed a new access point (the East Gate) at the corner of Memorial Drive and Boulevard providing new access to residents of the Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, and Grant Park neighborhoods to Oakland's east. In all of its work, HOF's restoration department follows the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.Capital Campaign - HOF embarked on a $10 million capital campaign to restore a significant section of the cemetery (East Hill), renovate the historic 1899 Oakland Bell Tower, build a new Visitor's Center and offices at the main gate, and address various site infrastructure issues. The HOF board pledged $1.7 million and The City of Atlanta, through Invest Atlanta, committed over $3.2 million to start the campaign, followed by various foundations. HOF has already completed 50% of restoration in East Hill and made significant progress with architects Smith Dalia to advance architectural plans for the Bell Tower renovation (targeted to begin at the end of 2021) and the construction of a new Visitors Center (2022/2023). PPP loan - HOF secured a PPP loan for $226K and maintained staffing levels during the pandemic lockdown. HOF filed for and received loan forgiveness in 2021.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$352.8KProgram 2 [2020]
Gardens - HOF's Gardens department completed the installation of new gardens in Phase II of the historic African American burial grounds as well as in Phase I of the East Hill, directly inside the newly established East Gate. HOF added more resources to the gardens team to provide additional human resources to handle the Foundation's increasing maintenance responsibilities. Despite COVID-19, HOF's semi-annual Plant Sales grossed around $110,000, a 23% year-over-year increase from 2019, and included a contact-less Herb & Veggie Sale and a Fall Pumpkin Patch. HOF's gardens department restores and establishes landscape with two main priorities: 1) historical appropriateness, and 2) sustainability. Oakland's gardens reflect the diversity of the Victorian gardening tradition and provide seasonal beauty.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$782.2KProgram 3 [2020]
Programming/Education - COVID-19 forced significant innovation for HOF's programming and education departments leading to the creation of significant low contact and contact-less programmatic offerings. Scavenger Hunts were expanded significantly, and their use increased by 380% generating approx. $35,000. In place of an in-person Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween tour, HOF created a filmed version with local filmmakers that we emailed to ticket holders. HOF's Juneteenth partnership with Flux Projects and curator Charmaine Minnefield "Remembrance as Resistance" became a hybrid of virtual and digital programming.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$57K
