Line 5 Oil Pipeline Resistance
Currently participating in a multi-party lawsuit challenging the Wisconsin DNR’s issuance of wetland permits for the Line 5 re-route project. The proposed route would affect 186 water crossings and 101 acres of wetlands. Invited to join the case as the grassroots “face” of fossil fuel resistance in Wisconsin due to our long history fighting Enbridge pipelines. Recent legal win: Administrative law judge issued a stay, halting construction activity until the lawsuit is resolved. Collected over 100,000 public comments on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Assessment. Expanded access to the Bad River film across Wisconsin and led panel discussions to build solidarity around land and water issues. Serving as an organizing partner for the Fish for Future origami project (fishforfuture.org). We’re setting out to break the record for the largest display of origami fish! Each paper fish represents our shared commitment to protecting the Great Lakes.GeographiesWisconsin, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedClimate change,Environmental justiceMultiracial people––Energy Justice
350 Wisconsin is running a campaign with state and national allies to: transform our energy system; advance clean energy;and win energy equity for all Wisconsinites. Campaign tactics include: formal intervention at the PSC; grassroots mobilization; direct action; and messaging on what’s at stake. Our efforts are focused on: raising public awareness; countering misleading utility narratives; increasing community engagement with the PSC; and building strong public opposition to fossil fuel infrastructure. Successes include: In 2023, we defeated utility plans to eliminate solar net metering in Wisconsin; also successfully fought to reduce proposed rate hikes in the Dane County area. Achieved another win in July 2024 when the Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to reject a utility request for precertification funding for a new fossil gas plant. The rejection was based on the utility’s failure to demonstrate that the investment would benefit customers Launched our Wisconsin Toolkit for Energy Engagement. 350 Wisconsin created this toolkit to lower the barriers to participation by demystifying energy decision-making processes, explaining key issues in everyday language, and uplifting inclusive and accessible options for everyone to speak out. Fighting Utility Methane Gas Plans: As in other Midwest states, new data centers are being used to justify repowering decommissioned coal plants with natural gas, delaying our clean energy transition, derailing climate goals, and exposing communities to ongoing health impacts. We're working with the grassroots climate justice community to defeat proposals for $2 billion worth of investment in gas infrastructure in Wisconsin for power generation, LNG storage, and an LNG pipeline.GeographiesWisconsin, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedClimate change,Environmental justiceMultiracial people––Local Climate Solutions
Volunteer-led community working groups are actively engaged at the local level to push for ambitious, equitable climate action Volunteer-led groups address local needs and goals, including: City fleet and school bus electrification Building decarbonization Safe, energy-efficient affordable housing Green infrastructure University sustainability Success examples: Won passage of Madison’s commercial building energy benchmarking program (BESP) - helps building owners and managers understand their energy usage, identify inefficiencies, and make informed decisions about energy-saving measures, ultimately leading to reduced costs and improved sustainability Secured a zoning amendment to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs) - promotes more compact, efficient and affordable housing (crucial for reducing carbon emissions associated with commuting), reduces per-capita carbon emissions and land consumption, and encourages sustainable urban development. Pressured UW–Madison to include sustainability measures in a major new campus development projectGeographiesWisconsin, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEnvironmentMultiracial people––
