BUILDING SUPPORT FOR DEMOCRACY-STRENGTHENING PRINCIPLES AMONG THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY:WE USED OUR PLATFORM TO BOLSTER POSITIVE MESSAGING AND SUPPORT FOR LARGELY POPULAR AND BIPARTISAN DEMOCRACY STRENGTHENING ISSUES (E.G., VOTING RIGHTS, CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM, AND OBJECTIVE REDISTRICTING). WE ENCOURAGED BUSINESS LEADERS TO SUPPORT (OR, AT MINIMUM, NOT OPPOSE) THESE POLICIES, AND MOBILIZE KEY DONORS AND ALUMNI NETWORKS TO ADVOCATE FOR PRO-DEMOCRACY REFORM. WE USED LEADERSHIP NOW MEMBER AND ALUMNI NETWORKS, LINKEDIN TARGETING, EARNED MEDIA AND OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENTS TO MAKE BUSINESS LEADERS ENGAGE WITH THE IMPORTANCE OF DEMOCRACY IN A FUNCTIONING FREE MARKET. EFFORTS TO DISCREDIT ELECTION RESULTS WERE MET BY AN UNPRECEDENTED AND COORDINATED RESPONSE ACROSS SECTORS, INCLUDING VISIBLE MOBILIZATION BY BUSINESS. LEADERSHIP NOW EARNED SIGNIFICANT CREDIBILITY AS ONE OF THE EARLIEST VOICES IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST MISINFORMATION. LEADERSHIP NOW'S RAPID RECOMMENDATIONS WERE ADOPTED BY MEMBERS, OTHER EXECUTIVES, AND WERE VISIBLE IN THE PRESS. ADDITIONALLY, AS A CORE TENET OF DEMOCRACY, IN 2020 LEADERSHIP NOW EXPANDED ITS WORK ON RACIAL EQUITY. THE OUTPOURING OF BUSINESS SUPPORT IN RESPONSE TO GEORGE FLOYD'S DEATH COULD HAVE BEEN EPHEMERAL. OVER 1,200 EXECUTIVES SIGNED LEADERSHIP NOW'S RACIAL EQUITY PLEDGE COMMITTING TO CONCRETE ACTIONS, INCLUDING SUPPORT FOR VOTING RIGHTS. LEADERSHIP NOW ALSO WORKED ON PRO-DEMOCRACY INITIATIVES LIKE RANK-CHOICE VOTING. VETTING INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN PRO-DEMOCRACY VENTURES FOR MEMBERS:2020 WAS THE HIGHEST TURNOUT ELECTION SINCE 1900, A MAJOR MILESTONE PARTICULARLY IN LIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC. LEADERSHIP NOW PARTNERED WITH SOME SEVERAL LARGE SCALE REGISTRATION PLAYERS - THOSE WITH ONLINE AND MAIL-BASED MODELS PIVOTED SUCCESSFULLY TO PANDEMIC CONDITIONS. AS A CORE MISSION, LEADERSHIP NOW ALSO EDUCATED AND ENGAGED EXECUTIVES AND EMPLOYEES ON THE NEED TO COUNTER RESTRICTIVE VOTING POLICIES, PARTISAN REDISTRICTING, AND OTHER THREATS TO DEMOCRACY AT THE STATE LEVEL. LEADERSHIP NOW ALSO LEANED IN ON STATE-LEVEL ELECTORAL REFORMS AND BALLOT INITIATIVES - WITH A MAJOR WIN IN ALASKA (RCV + OPEN PRIMARIES + DARK MONEY TRANSPARENCY). NEW LEADERS TO WATCH:LEADERSHIP NOW MEMBERS WORKED TOGETHER TO BUILD A NEW LEADERS TO WATCH CANDIDATE LIST. FOLLOWING A RIGOROUS PROCESS INVOLVING THE COLLECTION, SCORING, AND ANALYSIS OF OVER 100 CANDIDATE RECOMMENDATIONS, LEADERSHIP NOW MEMBERS INTERVIEWED DOZENS OF CANDIDATES FOR THE U.S. HOUSE AND SENATE BEFORE SETTLING ON A FINAL SLATE. NEW LEADERSHIP NOW LEADERS HAD SIGNIFICANT WINS IN GEORGIA. EXISTING NEW LEADERS IN THE HOUSE HELD GROUND (16/18), BUT ONLY TWO NEW CANDIDATES IN THE HOUSE AND TWO IN THE SENATE SUCCEEDED. LEADERSHIP NOW ANALYZED THE IMPACT OF INVESTMENTS IN CANDIDATES AND FOUND: DOLLARS ARE NOT ENOUGH. SPEND WAS WEIGHTED TOWARD TRANSACTIONAL MEDIA ADS (~50% OF TOTAL SPENDING, 77% OF INDEPENDENT EXPENDITURES BY SUPERPACS AND 501C4S).
