Practical support for abortion seekers
The number of individuals forced to travel long distances for abortion care has been steadily increasing for many years, and has spiked following the Supreme Court’s June 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision. Social stigma, lack of access to basic healthcare, state level restrictions (including gestational bans, parental involvement and TRAP laws), lack of local providers, spread of misinformation, procedure costs, and the logistical and financial burden of travel present insurmountable barriers to accessing abortion care for many people. Those facing the most barriers to accessing abortion care have historically been women living at or below the federal poverty line, people of color, minors, undocumented immigrants, people living in communities with limited transportation infrastructure, individuals living in states hostile to women’s healthcare, disabled people, survivors of abuse, and those who rely on Medicaid or are uninsured. The Brigid Alliance works with these individuals and communities disproportionately affected by abortion restrictions by providing high quality, compassionate, and comprehensive logistical and practical support services. Our client services team is staffed with individuals with social work, case management, and crisis counseling backgrounds, and they receive training to provide non-judgmental, trauma-informed, compassionate support to our clients. As part of our program, our coordinators: connect with individuals across the country who face systemic, geographic, logistical, legislative and financial barriers to abortion access; tailor each client’s itinerary to best fit their unique needs and circumstances; arrange and pay for long distance travel, overnight accommodations, and local transit; cover travel expenses such as gas, tolls, childcare, meals and other related costs; provide referrals and coordinate with local or regional volunteers as needed; & offer compassionate support throughout our clients’ journey.GeographiesUnited StatesDatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedAbortion,Reproductive rightsPregnant people4.6K–
