Community Engagement and Education
Community engagement: Offered Saturday community farm days for volunteers; hosted community events including BIOPC lunch and Black Earth Day; distributed free food to Yesler residents at community events. Supported development of local food system by assigning Managing Director to Advisory Committee of South Seattle Food Hub and King County Food Systems Advisory Council. Education: Hosted workshops for community; hosted youth summer experience with Yesler summer program; visits by and presentations at local preschoosl; SU engineering project-air quality and soil moisture; SU Sustainability class lab site; Soil testing continues. Leadership development:Hosted Doris Duke interns for summer; 2 UW MSW intern placement; Promoted assistant to Yes Farm Manager position. Staff spoke an many community events. Professional Development for staff including trip to Black Urban Growers Conference Vegetable distribution: Free vegetables to Yesler community events: donations to Clean Greens and Free Food for All food pantries; sold at Delridge (ACHD) and University Farmers Market; RBAC free market and Byrd Barr Place food bags as well as to local restaurants; veg. giveaways to volunteers and visitors.
