Program 1 [2020]
The Earth Species Project spent 2020 in pursuit of collecting animal behavior and communication data sets in collaboration with other organizations to meet the goals of (i) decoding animal communications and language, (ii) preserving behavioral biodiversity before it disappears and (iii) fueling further research and development in the biological sciences. The Earth Species Project has developed research partners, including: University of Oxford, Alaska Whale Foundation, The Rockefeller University, Harvard University, University of Michigan, Berkeley, UC Davis, Project CETI, Simons Institute, ETI Institute, Internet Archive, Cornell University, Imperial College London, Woods Hole Oceanographic, University of Zurich, Warwick, MBARI, to name a few.Simultaneously, we hired our first AI Research Engineer and began developing our first AI research, all open-source and available on Github.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$453.1KAI and Animal Communication Research
ESP has significantly expanded the scope of our operations and impact over the past year including: Expanding our team from 9 to 15 people; Publishing our technical roadmap in a co-authored perspectives piece in Science magazine alongside several of our partners; Developing new tools to support processing of bioacoustic data, including Voxaboxen and bio denoising tools; Continuing to iterate on our previously published foundation models and benchmarks; Continuing to work with a wide range of research scientists and institutions on data sharing and research projects. Supporting the efforts of the wider research community by acting as science leads for a small grant program on AI and animal communication administered by Experiment.com; Significantly raising awareness of the topic of AI and animal communication through our website, newsletters, social media, events and in-depth international feature coverage including articles in the Financial Times, Wired, Scientific American and Geekwire.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$2.3M
