Nebraska Appleseed Action Fund ensures every Nebraskans' voice is heard in public decision making processes, whether that is in the halls of legislative bodies or at the ballot box. In 2020, we partnered with Nebraskans for Responsible Lending to qualify and then pass a ballot initiative to cap interest rates for payday lenders in Nebraska. The initiative passed with 83% of Nebraska voters in support of the measure. Our work included supporting the recruitment of organizations to endorse the effort, engaging with individuals who have used payday loans to testify at public hearings and participate in a paid media campaign, and supporting the engagement of other coalition members in efforts to educate voters and turn out people to vote. Additionally, we supported efforts to connect with low-propensity voters of color in Omaha, Lincoln, and 8 rural communities and encouraged them to vote in the 2020 election.
