Program 1 [2021]
Community Springs only program is our fellowship. We hire people in poverty to work on the issues that they feel contribute to the cycle of poverty. We are, therefore, providing an income to people in poverty and cultivating power to make systemic changes in their communities. This past year we hired four fellows who built two campaigns: one on COVID-19 relief and one on supporting people returning from incarceration. We measure success of our fellowship program based on improvements in the fellows lives and their ability to create structural change with their campaigns. All fellows showed significant improvement in the stability of their lives and perceptions of themselves over the course of the fellowship. Two fellows secured stable housing as a result of employment with Community Spring. One fellow purchased a car, and one fellows credit score increased by 200 points. In our evaluation survey, all fellows scored higher in the economic resilience question, the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status and the Sense of Control Scale compared to the beginning and midpoint of the fellowship. When the fellowship concluded, all fellows secured employment at local nonprofit organizations.Fellows were also highly successful in their campaign work. From June through October 2020, fellows built and implemented a direct COVID-19 relief program. We provided one-time $300 payments to 127 low-income households. The project provided an opportunity to talk about the importance of cash as a tool for poverty alleviation, and it led to an additional grant for a guaranteed income pilot that we will launch in November 2021. This team of fellows also built a campaign around supporting people returning from incarceration. All fellows had been previously impacted by the justice system and therefore felt that re-entry was a key point to break the cycle of poverty. They created a peer support network of formerly incarcerated people, wrote a guide to re-entry in Alachua County, started a fair chance certification process for businesses that hire people with criminal records, and advocated for a city-wide ordinance that would ensure that private employers consider applicants on an individual basis rather than only their criminal record. Community Springs fellowship program was highly impactful for both the fellows that participated and the wider community who benefited from their campaigns.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2020 – Jun 30, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$207.9KProgram 1 [2024]
