Health Care Research for Underserved Populations
Health care research focused on primary and preventive care for low income and disadvantaged populations. The West Virginia Alliance for Creative Health Solutions, Inc. (WVACHS) is an interdisciplinary practice-based research network (PBRN) of primary care clinicians, administrators, and public health leaders engaged in research to improve health and health care systems for West Virginians, particularly those who are underserved. WVACHS clinician researchers conduct research activities on a voluntary basis, alongside their primary care clinical practices. We engage interested medical and other health professions students in practice-based research projects during their clinical rotations and support their interest with tools, training, and research expertise.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$34.5KDissemination of Health Research Findings
Dissemination of research results to inform practice, policy, and public education. In 2023, WVACHS members had two articles published in peer-reviewed open access journals from our study examining factors that facilitated and hindered entrance into and retention in medication-assisted (MAT) programs for opioid use disorder from the perspective of individuals in recovery. Another article from the same study was accepted for publication in 2024. WVACHS members presented findings from the Mountaineer Autism Project at a stakeholder meeting, presented the CATCH My Breath Vaping Prevention program to a legislative committee and at the Appalachian Translational Research Network conference, and earned a People's Choice award at a poster session on Meal Kit Delivery to Rural WV Households at the WV Rural Health Conference. Research Mentorship Program. In 2023, the WVACHS implemented a research mentorship program to support emerging practice-based researchers through mentoring and stipends to practicing clinicians who engage medical and other health professions students in research projects. Mentors and mentees receive training and support in all stages of the research process. In 2023, WVACHS clinician members worked with 8 individual students in 4 research projects. In addition, WVACHS contracts with two part-time Research Assistants, one in medical school and one pre-med, who contribute to all phases of research while they hone their own research skills.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$8.9K
