Programs
Program 1 [2021]
ONE EARTH HAS THREE CORRESPONDING PROGRAMS SCIENCE, PHILANTHROPY, AND COMMUNICATIONS -- WHICH WORK IN UNISON TO HELP SCALE COLLECTIVE CLIMATE ACTION. THE SCIENCE PROGRAM LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR A VISION OF THE FUTURE THAT'S POSSIBLE. THE PHILANTHROPY PROGRAM WORKS TO INSPIRE DONORS OF ALL LEVELS TO SUPPORT PRIORITY REGIONS AND PROJECTS. AND THE COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM BUILDS A NEW NARRATIVE THAT RECONNECTS PEOPLE TO THE EARTH, AND INSPIRES EVERYONE TO JOIN THE FIGHT FOR A JUST AND VIBRANT FUTURE. IN SEARCH OF A STRATEGY TO SOLVE THE CLIMATE CRISIS, ONE EARTH SPEARHEADED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GROUNDBREAKING CLIMATE MODEL PUBLISHED IN ACHIEVING THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT GOALS, A BOOK AUTHORED BY 17 LEADING CLIMATE AND ENERGY SCIENTISTS. THE MODEL SHOWS THAT WE CAN LIMIT GLOBAL TEMPERATURE RISE TO 1.5 DEGREES CELSIUS THROUGH A RAPID TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS AT SCALE, ACHIEVING NET ZERO EMISSIONS BY 2040. THE 500-PAGE BOOK WAS RELEASED BY THE PRESTIGIOUS SCIENTIFIC PUBLISHER SPRINGER NATURE AND HAS QUICKLY BECOME THE MOST DOWNLOADED CLIMATE TEXT IN THE PUBLISHER'S HISTORY.IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LEADING BIODIVERSITY EXPERTS, ONE EARTH LED THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GLOBAL SAFETY NET, THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE GLOBAL-SCALE ANALYSIS OF TERRESTRIAL AREAS ESSENTIAL FOR BIODIVERSITY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE, TOTALING 50.4% OF THE EARTH'S LAND. THE REPORT WAS PUBLISHED IN SCIENCE ADVANCES, AND IS ALSO AVAILABLE THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE WEB APPLICATION THAT ALLOWS USERS TO CLICK ON A COUNTRY, STATE, OR ECOREGION TO SEE CONFIGURATIONS OF BIOLOGICALLY IMPORTANT LAND FOR EACH REGION. THE GSN IS QUICKLY GAINING MOMENTUM, INFLUENCING CONSERVATION AND CLIMATE POLICY AT THE INTERNATIONAL AND REGIONAL LEVELS. IT WAS ALSO RECENTLY HONORED BY FAST COMPANY AS A "WORLD CHANGING IDEA" IN THE DATA & AI CATEGORY.ONE EARTH IS TAKING THIS WORK FORWARD BY SUPPORTING SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY EFFORTS FOCUSED ON SOLVING THREE COMPLEX, INTERCONNECTED CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE, BIODIVERSITY LOSS, AND FOOD SECURITY. SCIENCE GIVES US THE CLARITY AND CONFIDENCE TO INVEST IN SOLUTIONS THAT WORK AND HELPS TURN SCIENCE INTO ACTION.TO SOLVE THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND BUILD THE FUTURE WE WANT, WE MUST RADICALLY SCALE CLIMATE PHILANTHROPY TO TARGET ON-THE-GROUND EFFORTS. LESS THAN 2% OF GLOBAL GIVING SUPPORTS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND CLIMATE CHANGE, AND ONLY ONE-QUARTER OF THAT FUNDING MAKES IT TO ON-THE-GROUND CLIMATE SOLUTIONS. AND LESS THAN 0.2% OF FOUNDATION DOLLARS GOES TO SUPPORTING WOMEN-LED INITIATIVES. ONE EARTH WORKS TO MOBILIZE SIGNIFICANT PHILANTHROPIC CAPITAL -- FROM HIGH-NET-WORTH FAMILIES, COMPANIES, AND EVERYDAY CITIZENS -- TO PROVIDE URGENTLY NEEDED RESOURCES TO LEADERS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITIES WHO ARE IMPLEMENTING CLIMATE SOLUTIONS TODAY. ONE EARTH SEES AN OPPORTUNITY TO SCALE CLIMATE PHILANTHROPY BY DEMOCRATIZING ACCESS TO INNOVATIVE AND IMPACTFUL PROJECTS AROUND THE WORLD, ENABLING FUNDERS AT ALL LEVELS TO DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITIES AND GRASSROOTS LEADERS WHO ARE WORKING TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO RENEWABLE ENERGY; TO PROTECT AND RESTORE VITALLY IMPORTANT ECOSYSTEMS; AND TO SUPPORT FARMERS IN THE TRANSITION TO REGENERATIVE, CLIMATE-FRIENDLY AGRICULTURE. TO MEET THIS NEED, AND IN RESPONSE TO RAPIDLY GROWING INTEREST IN CLIMATE PHILANTHROPY, ONE EARTH LAUNCHED THE PROJECT MARKETPLACE IN 2020, A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND ONLINE DATABASE OF VETTED PROJECTS CURRENTLY SEEKING FUNDING, CONTRIBUTED BY A NETWORK OF PARTNERS ACROSS THESE THREE PILLARS OF ACTION. DONORS CAN DIRECTLY SUPPORT PROJECTS IN THEIR LOCAL BIOREGION AND AROUND THE WORLD THAT DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE TO SOLVING THE CLIMATE CRISIS.CLIMATE NIHILISM HAS, UNFORTUNATELY, GONE VIRAL, ESPECIALLY AMONG YOUNGER INDIVIDUALS. CURRENT STUDIES SHOW THAT, WHILE MOST PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING, MANY BELIEVE THAT WORST-CASE SCENARIOS ARE LIKELY, AND SOME BELIEVE IT'S ALREADY TOO LATE. A FEW YEARS AGO, "CLIMATE DENIERS" WERE DERAILING PROGRESS, BUT TODAY THE GREATEST THREAT TO SOLVING CLIMATE CHANGE IS A SENSE OF HOPELESSNESS. WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT THE 1.5 DEGREES CELSIUS GOAL IS ACHIEVABLE IF WE ACT TOGETHER WITH FOCUS AND DETERMINATION.ONE EARTH CREATES MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE URGENCY OF LIMITING GLOBAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE RISE TO 1.5 DEGREES CELSIUS AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, FOCUSING ON THREE KEY AUDIENCES. WE SHOWCASE INSPIRING PROJECTS OF COMMUNITY-LED ACTION TO ATTRACT INVESTMENT IN FRONTLINE SOLUTIONS AROUND THE WORLD. WE PRODUCE EXECUTIVE BRIEFINGS TO INFORM STAKEHOLDERS AND DECISION MAKERS ADVOCATING FOR KEY POLICY SHIFTS. AND WE USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD A BROAD PUBLIC MOVEMENT OF ENGAGED AND OPTIMISTIC CHANGEMAKERS, TELLING THE STORY OF THE TRANSFORMATION THAT IS ALREADY UNDERWAY AND THE JUST AND VIBRANT FUTURE THAT IS POSSIBLE.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesAug 14, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$300KOne Earth Climate Initiative
One Earth has three focus areas - Knowledge through Science, Opportunity through Action, and Inspiration through Storytelling - that work together to drive collective action for the Earth. Knowledge through Science: The interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss threaten the stability of our planet's ecosystems and all life. Despite growing awareness, effective pathways to address these challenges remain unclear, often leading to fragmented, insufficient, and sometimes counterproductive efforts. One Earth collaborates with leading experts to develop scientific models and solution pathways designed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C. Our approach focuses on three pillars of collective action that put nature and people at the center of the transformation that's necessary: Transitioning to 100% renewable energy for all Protecting, connecting, and restoring 50% of the Earth's lands and oceans Shifting to net-zero food and fiber systems By providing clear, science-backed guidance that honors the life-systems of our planet, we empower a wide array of stakeholders to take informed action on long-lasting solutions. Our groundbreaking One Earth climate model provides a roadmap to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C using currently available technologies. The model, titled "Achieving the Paris Climate Agreement Goals" (Teske et al. 2019), outlines the least-cost pathways for decarbonizing our energy system and highlights the critical role forests and agricultural systems can play. Part 2 of the model (Teske et al. 2022) provides decarbonization strategies for all major industries with unprecedented granularity. The climate model provided the basis for One Earth's three pillar solution approach and our framework of 76 distinct solutions for solving the climate crisis and building a resilient future. One Earth spearheaded the development of The Global Safety Net (GSN), the first comprehensive global-scale analysis of terrestrial areas crucial for biodiversity and climate resilience. Most of the biodiversity-focused science work at One Earth informs the scientific layers and approach of the Global Safety Net project. Opportunity through Action: Increasingly, more people and institutions want to use their time, resources, and influence to drive positive change for the planet. However, the lack of clarity and understanding about the most impactful and available solutions - that center nature and equity - is hindering the ability to drive transformative change at both a local and global scale. We turn our solutions-focused science into accessible, actionable tools to equip a diverse range of individuals and organizations with the knowledge and resources needed to drive greater impact across Earth's 185 bioregions. The One Earth Solutions Framework Identifies the 76 most effective climate and nature-based solutions across our three pillars and uniquely integrates a series of intersectional themes and levers of change to ensure that the well-being of people, especially marginalized communities, and nature is at the heart of the global transition. The Solutions Framework, available on the One Earth website, can empower stakeholders at all levels by informing policy, driving collective action, guiding strategic investments, and accelerating capital flow toward the most effective, high-impact solutions essential for building a regenerative, low-carbon future. We created an interactive global map (GlobalSafetyNet.app) that allows users to explore the GSN data for any location and helps identify priority areas for biodiversity and carbon storage that need to be protected, restored, and connected. The One Earth Navigator is an interactive globe that allows users to explore Earth's bioregions, ecoregions, and iconic species, and discover community-driven, place-based projects that are powerful examples of real-world solutions-in-action. Inspiration through Storytelling: Climate nihilism has unfortunately gone viral, particularly among younger generations. Recent studies reveal that while most people acknowledge climate change is occurring, many believe that worst-case scenarios are inevitable. A few years ago, "climate deniers" were derailing progress, but today the greatest threat to solving climate change is a widespread and pervasive sense of hopelessness. We leverage the power of digital media and storytelling to transform eco-anxiety into climate action, educating and inspiring our diverse global community to actively participate in creating a just and vibrant future. Through the diverse voices and perspectives of One Earth's global network of contributors, we've built a vast digital ecosystem of educational and inspirational content available on the One Earth website. The content is organized by an intuitive category tagging system, making it easy for visitors to discover innovative place-based solutions, demystify climate and biodiversity science, explore Earth's bioregions and iconic species, and read stories about the leaders and communities that are implementing the solutions we need now. We've produced over 250 short-form videos showcasing the stories of everyday heroes in communities around the world, the changemakers who are implementing solutions to the climate crisis, and the immense beauty of our planet's cultural and biological diversity. Together, we can solve the climate crisis to create a thriving world for people and nature.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$5M
