Land Rematriation and Restoration
Land Rematriation: Restoration efforts commenced with the removal of invasive species like blackberries tomake room for heritage trees and walking trails. We welcomed the public to the land through a series of 18workdays this spring and fall. In July BIPOC community was invited to a special soil sampling workshop with Dr.Melanie Malone to decide the best locations for our future planting projects. Many special groups visited thesite. Place-Based Art: In November we installed a 100 foot long fence banner created by poet Sasha LaPointe UpperSkagit and designer Jill Neumeister Pawnee. In December in celebration of our one year anniversary on theland we commissioned artists from local tribes to create yard signs uplifting Coast Salish values. Community Collaborations: In September we worked on an Indigenous Skate Jam in Tacoma organized by Lakota and Samoanskateboarder Spirit Miska in collaboration with yha Indigenous Creatives Collective ALMA Tacoma NativeArt Market and Alchemy Skateboarding. In October we participated in a Halloween Camas Planting Event at the Green Line led by the Common Acre. We partnered with Hailey Tayathy Quileute and Friends ofWaterfront Seattle to curate a series of pop up projects and installations featuring Indigenous artists. InNovember Projections 17: Planning Just Indigenous Futures was published online.This 2023 volume of theflagship journal of the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning was co-edited by Kevin Lujan LeeChamoru Daniel Engelberg and Indigenous Creatives Collective. We are proud of our ongoingpartnership with Chief Seattle Club to curate seasonal exhibitions featuring Native artists in their gallery spaceat the Cafe in downtown Seattle. We were honored to curate the inaugural 4 exhibitions at Native Action Networks new office space in Belltown Seattle. Our Executive Director Asia Tail serves on the City of Seattlesinaugural Indigenous Advisory Council.
