Holistic Mentoring
YMWAP serves young men in grades 8-12, with a 90% retention rate, and continued active engagement with alumni who stay a part of the YMWAP family. Students receive over two hours of weekly in- and out-of-school mentoring from YMWAP staff along with a team of school-based and near-peer mentors. Young men meet weekly with mentors at school and then come together as a group weekly from 3:00 -- 7:00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Led by staff and mentors, young men check in about school and home, share dinner, and discuss current events, conflicts, break-ups, mental health, growth mindset, credit scores, and college & career options. As young men gain trust, they open up about stresses--incarcerated and addicted family members, family health issues, housing/food insecurity, neighborhood violence, and the depression and anxiety that accompany daily racial trauma. We acknowledge the trauma of poverty and racism and help young men gain self-efficacy, purpose, and hope. YMWAP helps participants get jobs, lead community service, engage in fitness and recreation (including our annual N.H. wilderness weekend), and cultural enrichment (films, museums). They gain career exposure through mentors, guest educators, panels, work site visits, and Men of Color Career Night.GeographiesHyde Park, Boston, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedYouth mentoring,Youth servicesAdolescents,Preteens,People of African descent,People of Latin American descent,Economically disadvantaged people,Immigrants and migrants250–Education
YMWAP leaders are often called upon by school leaders, educators, other school systems, METCO, and funders to consult on the needs of male youth of color. In 2022-23, YMWAP's Executive Director Jay Simpson was a member of the EdVestor Racial Equity Task where he led Teacher Dialog Series on effectively engaging young men in the classroom, a 2022 Institute for Nonprofit Practice Changemaker and SIF Innovator, and on the 2023-34 Nellie Mae Speakers Bureau. New Commonwealth Fund invited YMWAP to participate as a "trusted hub" in a state-funded maternal health equity public health initiative.GeographiesHyde Park, Boston, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedYouth mentoring,Youth servicesAdolescents,Preteens,People of African descent,People of Latin American descent,Economically disadvantaged people,Immigrants––
