This year continued to be a year of rebuilding for Community Alliance for Learning DBA WriterCoach Connection. We served 1,100 middle and high school students in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties with coaching in critical thinking and writing programs in public schools. The programs are geared toward improving students quality and effectiveness in written communication as well as researching, analyzing and drawing conclusions so they can communicate their opinions with thoughtfulness and conviction. 179 trained volunteer coaches worked in primarily a 2:1 ratio with the students providing individualized attention that educators know makes a huge difference in building skills as well as affording an adult mentorship relationship. Our coaches provided 2,550 hours of coaching to these students, who are predominantly from communities that have limited access to additional school enrichment programs. We also are now in partnership with the Oakland Boys and Girls Club Organization Youth of the Year program and have implemented an after-school writing improvement program where members (ages 14-17) learn through the lens of sports journalism. The program is known as the Oakland Press Box.
