Teaching at the Right Level Initiative
Education: The Education vertical played a key role in the global adaptation of Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), a proven approach aimed at building foundational skills in children across Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions through collaborations with governments and NGOs. By the end of 2023, TaRL had reached over 5 million children in 16 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa through our partnership with Empower Learning Africa. In Latin America, three new countries, in addition to ongoing initiatives in Brazil, piloted TaRL. In MENA, the Moroccan government expanded TaRL implementation through both in-school and after-school models. In addition to supporting interventions focused on foundational skills in local languages, the team pioneered a new approach for teaching English through local languages, called Language Learning from Familiar to Formal (L2F2). In 2023, L2F2 was deployed in over seven contexts and demonstrated substantial impact. The Education team also launched early years engagements, providing technical guidance to enhance the overall quality of early childhood education. These efforts were focused on a partnership in South Africa, aimed at creating sustainable, high-quality education pathways for young learners.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$604.7KAI Data Digitization Tool
Digital: The team developed an AI-based data digitization tool to simplify the process of data collection in education programs. The technology works by converting a picture of a form filled out by hand into digital data using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. A pilot program is underway in Nigeria in collaboration with Empower Learning Africa.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$142.6KSkills Training for Job Readiness
Skills Training: The organization introduced skills training in Kenya's Kisumu county with an objective of fostering collaboration among TVET faculty, government, and industry leaders to strengthen existing vocational centers, directly impacting job readiness. Over the past year, the team provided technical and soft-skills training to over 100 trainers across 10 TVETs, conducted a 40-hour, activity-based workshop in Kenya to improve training methodologies, and developed lesson plans for practical learning and lab upgradations. Furthermore, to foster industry partnerships, we partnered with 70+ industry partners to enhance youth employability. Nearly 250 students have been attached to the industry, and a digital platform is under development to streamline the recruitment process. This platform will create a unified digital space to connect students, employers, and alumni, optimizing placements and enabling data-driven improvements.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$29.8K
