Trans Coverage Track at Conference
Our primary event-related program was a trans coverage track that we hosted at the June Investigative Reporters & Editors conference. Our four panels featured 19 speakers, trans journalists and/or experts in covering trans communities, who spoke on topics like how to edit stories about trans communities, how to investigate the groups funding anti-trans action, and more. We had hundreds of attendees across the event. We also hosted a series of smaller socials at other conference events. While at the Investigative Reporters & Editors conference, we distributed $20,000-worth of fellowships to 11 journalists, which allowed them to attend our programming and the broader investigative training event at no cost to them. (Additional income and expenses occurred under fiscal sponsorship.)GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$41.2KTrans Community Coverage Outreach
For our coverage outreach, we sent a newsletter roughly once a month that contained various resources, updates, and links to news about trans communities. We also conducted direct outreach to newsrooms, including conversations with the New York Times, NPR, and CBS News. Additionally, our members hosted coverage trainings with Indiana Pro Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Club Journalists Institute, and the Reynolds Journalism institute that attracted around 200 attendees from multiple newsrooms and the public. We piloted a story stipends program, where we distributed a few stipends to support reporting on trans communities. This resulted in several stories and a forthcoming web project about trans communities and trans journalists approach to reporting on them.
