The Berkeley Public Schools Funds largest program expenditure is for Board directed grants to support classroom teaching and student learning in Berkeleys 19 public schools, serving over 9,500 students. The Fund awards grants for over 400 projects and activities providing academic support and enrichment. Grants support equipment and supply purchases for all subjects and disciplines; field trips to cultural scientific, environmental and natural history venues; visiting artists or other specialists; book and curriculum purchases; gardening, cooking and nutrition programs; special grants to outside organizations providing support and enrichment in Berkeleys schools; funding for science professional development for K-5 teachers; and funding for the local symphony to teach and perform for K-5 students. The Schools Fund provides fiscal sponsorship services including management, administrative and advisory services for special funds established by individuals or businesses and held by the Schools Fund to be used for specific programs. The Berkeley Public Schools Fund manages Berkeley Schools Volunteers, the largest volunteer program in the Berkeley schools. The program recruits, trains and places approximately 500 community members each year in classrooms, libraries, gardens, playgrounds and afterschool programs to support teachers, staff and students. The program works closely with community groups, individual citizens and active student groups on the UC campus, including coordinating class credit for teachers in training. The Schools Fund is responsible for fingerprinting volunteers.
