The Scratch Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing young people with digital tools and opportunities for creative learning through its Scratch and ScratchJr coding platforms. With an operating budget of $11.4 million and total revenue of $20 million, the Foundation has empowered over 100 million children globally to engage in creative coding and problem-solving since its inception in 2007. The organization does not rely on a single funder for 50% or more of its revenue, ensuring a diverse financial base to support its mission.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Scratch Foundation is to provide young people with digital tools and opportunities to imagine, create, share, and learn. This mission is realized through Scratch and ScratchJr coding platforms, moderation and management of a global online user community, and the facilitation of educator professional development resources and communities of practice.
Scratch pioneered block-based coding. Designed in 2007 by Prof. Mitchel Resnick and his Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, Scratch is based on decades of educational research. To ensure its sustainability, in October 2019, Scratch was moved out of MIT and into the newly established Scratch Foundation, an independent non-profit organization. The Foundation’s mission is to provide young people and educators and parents in their lives with digital tools and opportunities to imagine, create, share, and learn.
Scratch software is deliberately designed to allow children with no previous coding experience to write programs through playful tinkering and experimentation. Creating Scratch projects fosters the development of critical computational and creative thinking skills. Kids identify problems, break them into smaller parts, debug them, and iterate on solutions. They also learn about collaboration, reflection, and constructive feedback. These cognitive and psychosocial skills are important beyond coding, giving children tools to serve them well in the ever-changing landscape of life in the 21st Century.
Since the launch of Scratch in 2007, more than 100,000,000 children have created half a billion projects, making Scratch the world's largest creative coding community for kids. Thanks to this success, Scratch is now at a turning point where we must invest in modernizing our platform. This work will 1) ensure the learning and safety needs of children worldwide are met, 2) accommodate our incredible growth in sustainable and scalable ways, and 3) enhance our ability to quickly test and launch new features to continue fostering creative learning and engagement.
Creative learning and creative coding are critical if we are to prepare children for the challenges of tomorrow. In the words of Scratch’s founder, Prof. Mitchel Resnick, “With the proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies, it will be more important than ever for young people to develop the most human of their abilities, the abilities to think creatively, to engage empathetically, to work collaboratively, so that they can deal creatively, thoughtfully, and collectively with the challenges of a complex, fast-changing world.”
