Key Takeaways from the U.S. Democracy Hub Launch Webinar for Grantmakers

In case you missed our launch webinar for the U.S. Democracy Hub on September 19, 2024, in partnership with the Democracy Funders Network (DFN), we’ve created a short high-level summary outlining the key takeaways along with a link to the recording.

Overview

The U.S. Democracy Hub, developed through a partnership between Impala and the Democracy Funders Network (DFN), is poised to transform the way funders, nonprofits, and stakeholders navigate and understand the democracy funding landscape in the U.S.

Here are the six main highlights from the launch event that outline the value that the U.S. Democracy Hub brings to funders across the democracy sector:

  • Addressing Information Gaps in Democracy Funding: With the retirement of Candid's Foundation Funding for U.S. Democracy site, there was a critical need for a comprehensive tool to help funders and nonprofits better understand the democracy sector. The Democracy Hub fills this gap by providing up-to-date financial and organizational data for over 4,200 democracy-focused nonprofits and 23,000+ funders.

  • Enhanced Taxonomy for Accurate Analysis: One of the key improvements of the Democracy Hub over previous platforms is its modernized taxonomy, developed through months of collaboration with experts and practitioners. This new schema offers a more accurate categorization of democracy-related work, reflecting the current field better than the outdated models used in the past.

  • Holistic View of Funding: The platform provides a complete picture of funding beyond just foundation grants. It includes data from individual donors and donor-advised funds, giving users a more inclusive view of the financial landscape in the democracy space.

  • Empowering Funders and Nonprofits: Both funders and nonprofits can claim their profiles on the platform and update their information, allowing for more real-time data and collaboration. This user-driven approach aims to reduce the traditional data lag that nonprofits face with IRS filings.

  • Customization and Ecosystem Focus: The Hub allows users to drill down from a 30,000-foot view of the entire democracy sector to specific sub-ecosystems, such as voting rights or political violence, enabling targeted research and strategic decision-making.

  • A Living Resource: The Democracy Hub is designed to evolve, with plans to continually update data and enhance functionality based on user feedback. DFN also plans to establish an advisory board to ensure the platform stays relevant and accurate.
